Notes from under the blanket

Wool is itchy. Cotton loses the plot the moment it gets damp. Regular polar fleece is fine — in the way a beige sedan is fine. Coral fleece is different: its fibers are finer, taller, and packed far more densely, which traps a thicker layer of still air against your skin. Still air is nature's best insulator, and coral fleece is essentially a machine for holding onto it.

The number that matters is GSM — grams per square metre, the weight (and roughly the thickness) of the fabric. Most fleece pyjama pants sit around 180–220gsm. Cloud Legs are 380gsm, double-sided, which is why first-time wearers usually say something eloquent like "oh. OH."

The best part: unlike wool, coral fleece is completely non-itch and machine washable. Cold gentle cycle, air dry, and it actually gets softer over the first few washes as the pile relaxes. Science has never been this fluffy.

Here's Australia's dirty secret: our houses are colder inside than most European ones. Minimal insulation, single glazing, and floorboards with a personal vendetta mean a Melbourne living room in July regularly sits below 15°C — the World Health Organization's minimum for healthy indoor temperature.

Heating your whole house is expensive. Heating you is cheap. The strategy the energy-bill nerds call "personal warmth first": warm your body with layers, warm your feet above all (cold feet trigger whole-body cold perception), and only then reach for the heater. A hot water bottle, a decent throw, and full leg-and-foot coverage will beat a space heater's running costs every single week.

This is, not coincidentally, exactly the problem Cloud Legs were built for — the ankle gap between sock and legging is where the "I'm freezing" signal starts. Close the gap, keep the couch, skip the bill shock.

Fleece has two enemies: heat and fabric softener. Heat melts the tips of the fibers and mats the pile; softener coats them in a waxy film that kills the loft. Avoid both and your Cloud Legs will outlast several relationships.

The routine: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, with regular detergent. Skip the softener entirely — fleece doesn't need it. Then air dry, or tumble on the lowest setting if you must. Never iron (we're not sure why you'd want to, but people have asked).

If the pile ever looks flat after a big wash day, a soft-bristle brush against the nap fluffs it right back up. Ten seconds of brushing, brand-new cloud. You're welcome.
